Self-care for When Life is Challenging

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know self-care is a subject I am passionate about and something that is vital for the daily functioning of anxious minds.

Sometimes our self-care practices are not enough; sometimes we go through extremely challenging times in life. I am coming out of a difficult period in my life. I will spare you the details, but you know when you go through a challenging time, your anxiety is holding your hand and not the hand holding you need when you seek comfort and warmth during high times of stress and anxiety?

I am there with you; I know what it’s like to have multiple panic attacks in one day. The struggle to get out of bed. The lack of motivation, because all you can think about is anxiety.

I learned a few things over the past month, and I want to share them with you:

1. You will get through it. The pain, struggle, and anxiety that comes with this challenging time is overwhelming, and you want it to end. Just know this struggle will be over soon, and you will come out on the other side a stronger person.

2. Honor your feelings. Feeling like not going out with friends tonight because it's just too much to be around others at this time? It’s okay, reschedule for a later date. True friends will be there for you and understand your need to have time to yourself.

3. Take time off. If you have the ability and resources to take time off from work and or other responsibilities for a few hours or a day to unwind, take the time. If you are not able to, carve out 5, 10, 30 minutes for yourself at the end of the day to recenter

4. Seek comfort. Talk to a dear friend or family member, eat a piece of cake or snuggle up and watch TV whatever bring your comfort during this time, do it as long as it doesn't harm your body or mind.

You are brave; you will come out of this challenging time a stronger person. It may take a little time to bounce back to your usual self, and that is okay, take the time you need.
