Benefits and Risks of Treating Mental Concerns with Cannabis

Research has shown that cannabis can have an amazing impact on our mental health. Scientists and psychologists have found evidence that cannabis can help in situations where traditional medicine is failing, especially when it comes to depression, anxiety, and ADHD.

For example, when we discuss depression and anxiety, CBD, one of cannabis’ main compounds, has the ability to produce antidepressant and anxiolytic effects, promoting embryonic and adult hippocampus neurogenesis.

In other words, it affects the neural circuit plasticity in a way that it produces a new generation of neurons. In ADHD patients, it works slightly different. This condition has symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness.

Cannabis can help to deal with ADHD in two ways – by treating nausea and insomnia without any side effects, and by helping alleviate the symptoms of hyperactivity, depression, and anxiety.

Cannabis use can have incredible mental health benefits. Nevertheless, there are some risks involved that you should be aware of before deciding to use it as a way to deal with a particular mental issue. For example, a recent study has shown that 50% of the participants who used cannabis had paranoid thoughts, compared to 30% of those who used a placebo.

This is caused by another cannabis’ main compound — THC. It is considered to be the main trigger for paranoia among occasional and regular cannabis users because of its ability to cause perceptual changes in the brain.

Another known risk is the fact that cannabis can cause schizophrenia symptoms to appear much earlier in life. This is seen mostly in heavy users. If the person already suffers from schizophrenia, then THC can increase the symptoms like emotional withdrawal, psychomotor retardation, poor rapport, and blunted affect.

As you can see, cannabis use can have numerous positive and negative effects on our mental health. The best way to make sure you are helping yourself is to consult your doctor before deciding to try it as a way of dealing with certain mental issues.
