It's Time To Start Being Honest About Your Mental Health

When it comes to dealing with any problems that you might be having with your mental health, one of the most common things that a lot of people do is that they try as hard as possible to keep it to themselves. There are plenty of reasons that people do this. From being worried about the stigma attached to mental illness to the fear that that might become a burden to the people in their life, most people prefer to just pretend that everything's fine. Of course, anyone who's actually done this can tell you that it rarely works out. The truth is, if you're not honest with the people around you, you're just going to end up making your own life a lot more difficult. With that in mind, here are some ways to start being more honest and open about your mental health.

Your friends and family

The easiest people to open up to can often be your friends since they're the ones who have probably seen you at all of your ups and downs. Talking to your family about your mental health can be incredibly difficult and if you feel that it would put in an unsafe position then you should never feel obligated to tell anyone. But if you think that they would understand and support you, then talking to them about what you're going through can be incredibly positive. Believe me, you're not a burden to them just because you let them know what's happening in your life and what you're dealing with.

A professional

If you feel as though your friends and family are too much a large part of your life to discuss these kinds of things with, you might prefer to speak to someone with a little more distance. A licensed mental health professional can not only offer you a safe space to be honest about what you're dealing with but can offer you potential solutions and coping mechanisms that you might never have been able to figure out on your own. Even if you don't find the right help straight away, you're sure to find someone you connect with and who can really help you.

Your work

This can often be the hardest one since many of us really don't want to reveal these many things about ourselves at work. However, it's important that you are open about these things in order to protect yourself. If you don't disclose a mental health issue and then something happens at work as a result of it, you're far less protected from disciplinary action or even being fired than if you had any mental illness on record. If you’re honest with your employer, they’re much better equipped to help and support you.

One of the most significant things that can come out of being more honest about your mental health is that more and more people around you will feel able to do the same. You might feel incredibly alone when it comes to your mental health but the truth is there are probably plenty of people around you feeling the exact same way. If you're able to show them how much better things can be when you're honest with each other, it's going to help improve not only your life but the lives of those around you as well.
