Just like physical health, all of us have a state of mental health affected by the world around us. Although it is possible to become irritable, stressed, or even depressed for no reason, these feelings and the illnesses that come with them are often triggered by events in your life. Contrary to popular belief, these things don’t need to be particularly big or distressing - Even small actions can have an impact. With that in mind, here are five ways you could ruin your own mental health.

1. Always Skipping Your Workouts

We all know regular exercise helps us to stay physically fit, but what many don’t know is that it can also help your mind too. While it won’t cure any mental illnesses, physical activity has been shown to help prevent and lessen the symptoms of certain ones, like depression and anxiety. Because of this, it’s recommended that you try to exercise for at least thirty minutes each day. Try to find activities you enjoy so that you’re less likely to skip your workouts.

2. Heading To Bed Late

Although it is important to stay active, you must also ensure you get plenty of rest. After a rough night’s sleep or no sleep at all, you get up the next morning feeling cranky, emotional, and irritable. These effects don’t last a particularly long time, but, if you continue to lose sleep, it will cause serious physical and mental harm in the long run. For this reason, you must ensure you head to bed at a reasonable hour and aim to get between six and nine hours sleep each night.

3. Refusing To Get Help

When you know you need professional help, refusing to seek it is the very worst thing that you can do. These days, mental health problems are much less of a stigma, with many countries offering mental health services for free or cheaply. In the UK we have the NHS, and in Australia, there are bulk billing doctors and mental health care plans. Asking for help can be tough, but, once it’s out of the way, you can receive the support, resources, and treatments you may need.

4. Isolating Yourself From Friends

We all need time to ourselves now and then, especially when going through particularly challenging times mentally. However, isolating yourself completely from those you love is never going to help. Even the most introverted people require some social interaction. If you stay at home all day every day, you’re only going to feel worse in the end. For this reason, you should make regular plans with friends and family and text and call them often.

5. Letting Clutter Build Up

No one particularly enjoys cleaning and tidying, but it’s just one of those things that you have to do. If you put off the chore and allow clutter to build up in your home, it can start to affect your mental health. Unbeknownst to many, clutter is a major source of psychological stress. It can make you feel weighed down, both physically and mentally, and can even develop into serious illnesses. To keep that from happening, you should take the time to tidy your home regularly.

Mental health should be taken seriously, so keep yours in good condition by avoiding the mistakes listed above.
